Get Your Business Listed on Google — and Actually Found
Being on Google Maps is not the same as ranking on it. Here is exactly how to get listed, what verification really involves, and what decides whether you show up in the map pack afterwards.
How to get listed on Google, step by step
Your listing lives in Google Business Profile, which is free. The listing itself takes about fifteen minutes to create; verification is the part that trips people up, and how you verify depends on what Google decides your business looks like.
- Search your business name first — Google may have auto-created a listing you can claim rather than duplicate
- Create or claim the profile at google.com/business with your exact legal name, address and phone
- Choose a primary category carefully — it does more for your ranking than almost anything else on the profile
- Verify: usually a video recording of your premises now, sometimes phone, email or a postcard
- Only after verification does the listing appear publicly and start ranking
Why most listings never reach the map pack
The map pack is the three results above the normal listings, and that is where the calls come from. Getting listed puts you in the running; it does not put you in the top three. What decides it is proximity to the searcher, relevance of your categories and content, and how prominent your business looks across the rest of the web.
- Wrong or too-broad primary category — the single most common mistake we see
- Name, address and phone that disagree with your website or other directories
- Thin profile: no services, no hours, few photos, no description
- Few reviews, or reviews nobody has replied to
- No listings anywhere else, so Google has nothing corroborating that you exist
What we do if you would rather not
We claim and verify the profile, pick and test the categories, write the services and description, load the photos, and then keep it current — because a profile that goes stale quietly slides down the map pack. We also get you listed consistently everywhere else, since Google reads those other listings as corroboration.
- Claim and verification handled end to end, including failed-verification appeals
- Category testing rather than guessing — we check what ranks in your market
- Listed and kept accurate across 140+ directories, maps and apps
- Reviews requested, monitored and answered
